What information is passed on to a credit card company when a purchase is made?

What information is passed on to a credit card company by merchants when a purchase is made? On my credit card statement, listed is the date, the amount, a purchase tracking number (I think), the merchant, and the merchant location (with the purchaser info obviously also shared). Does the credit card company collect more […]

Credit card number stolen! How do I protect others?

My credit card number was stolen! How do I determine the most likely culprit (or at least how they did it) and try to ensure it doesn’t happen again either to me or to someone else? I have a relatively new credit card. It lives in my pocket, I have never handed it to anyone […]

Help me to have dinner!

I’m in the Atlanta airport, penniless except for a memorized credit card number, expiration date and security code. Is there any way I can eat dinner? I just got back from Brazil with only Brazilian currency in my possession (I packed my cards and dollars in my checked luggage, stupidly by accident). My flight was […]

Can I make an effective dispute of my credit report?

A creditor and I disagree on the amount I owe. Not paying what they say I owe will negatively affect my credit. Do I have any options? I could write two pages on all the lies I’ve been told on the phone and all the times I’ve tried to use their website to make payments […]

Now I’m in here every evening serving chowder and ice tea

How might this credit card fraud have happened? Someone used our Visa credit card number when attempting to spend $300.00 at Abercrombie.com. Maybe they intended to buy and sell a gift voucher at a profit. The bank noticed the suspicious behavior and cancelled the card.
What’s interesting is that we have never used this card anywhere. […]

How can I dig myself out of this credit card hole?

Given the current economy, would doing a “charge-off” on my credit cards be a reasonable option, and how would I go about doing it for my biggest benefit? Many years ago I had a college credit card that I couldn’t afford to pay off. I finally asked about a charge-off on it; about 80% […]

Why do my credit card finance charges make no sense?

Is it just me, or is the way credit card finance charges are calculated not make any sense? I recently found out that my credit card company applies finance charges in a way that strikes me as very weird, and I’d like to know if this is just the way it’s done, or if my […]

I might be home for christmas…

Should I use a credit card to buy a plane ticket home?
I’m a freshman in college about 5 states away from home. My girlfriend and I were hoping to go home this Christmas, but we don’t have all of the money right now. We might be able to scrounge up the money for one ticket, […]

Invest for the future vs. Debt reduction

Investing 201: Given the economic news of late, If the value of my mutual funds drop and the interest rate of my debts go up would it be prudent to liquidate the mutual funds to pay off my debts or should I “stay the course” despite this?

How can I get AmEx to stop sending me so much junk mail?

3-5 times a week, every week, I receive promotional offers from American Express (with whom I am a current cardholder). How do I get them to stop? The mailings vary, mostly they’re offers of new cards. I don’t even open them anymore- I just tear them up and throw them away, because I have supposedly […]

Get rich quick, repent at leisure?

Is it possible to take out huge sums of money as cash advances and then flee the country?

Help me fix my credit score.

Should I dispute the adverse item on my credit report or just pay it off? Also, will a balance transfer help or hurt me? Last July I moved and closed my account with my old cable company. I returned the equipment and paid the balance. I got a notice saying I owed them $69 but […]

Why bother trying to sign electronic signature pads?

Electronic signature capture devices are not designed to allow someone to accurately sign them. So why not switch from using my signature to an easy to draw secret symbol? Many stores now have electronic signature capture devices on their Point of Sale devices. I find it silly to try and use my actual […]

Not money-laundering, I swear!

Seeking e-commerce partner that supports funds disbursements (and Ruby on Rails). I’m building a (Rails-based) website for intramural sports teams, and I want to offer teams the ability to collect credit card payments from members for things like jerseys and parties. Essentially, each team would have its own merchant account; but all transactions for all […]
